Hi everyone!
I have the following question to you all: can Russian people recognize each other's origin from the accent, I mean, is there anything like "this guy is definitely from the north, he pronounces this and that differently from us". If so, what are the regional differences in the Russian language, and most importantly, which dialect should a student learn?
THANKS!

Re: Russian accents / dialects
hi,
Moscow dialect is the basis of the Russian literature language.
The difference in pronounciation won't affect understanding, but in some regions and even cities people may use peculiar words for certain notions. For example, in Moscow we say "bordyur" (a curb), and in St/Petersburg they call it "porebrik". Another example: "pod'ezd" in Moscow and "paradnaya" in St.Petersburg.

Русский не тот, кто носит русскую фамилию, а тот, кто любит Россию и считает её своим отечеством.
