Hi,
Can you please explain what rule will decide how to pronounce -ого adjective ending. In some cases the first "о" pronoounced as "a" and sometimes as "o". What willl decide how to proounce with a particular adjective?
Thank you

Re: How to pronounce -ого adjective ending
Hi,
for example "первого" when I listen to prononciation on forvo I hear it like "pjervava". In wiktionary it spelled like [ˈpʲervəvə].
Maybe I hear it wrong so better I rephase/simplify my original question
1. How to pronounce adjective ending -ого ?
2. Is the pronounciation consistently always the same no matter what was the original adjective?
Thank you for your help

Re: How to pronounce -ого adjective ending
Yes, in ordinary pronunciation you can hear sort of "pervava"
There's no rules at all.
It's just pronunciation kind of you hear "whaddya" what means "What do you"
If you don't understand phrase, for example
"встреча первава сентября" (meet 1th september)
And you ask spelled
You'll hear "встреча перв-О-Г-О сентября"
There's no rules at all.

Re: How to pronounce -ого adjective ending
thank you nevertheless it is still not clear for me:
In большого it is pronounced as "валш-ова". I assmue that we never would pronounce that like "валш-ава"
In первого it is pronounced as "перв-ава". I assmue that we never would pronounce that like "перв-ова"
So corresponding to the above what will determine that ова" or "ава" prononunciation is assigned to a specific adjective? Is there a rule which result in that distiction or we have to simply memorize for each adjective that for example большой will take ова (and not ава
simply because it is большой and not a rule decided that pronounciation?
Thank you for your help

Re: How to pronounce -ого adjective ending
No rules at all. It's need memorize though it's hard.
But, you can always to speak "ого"
It'll be little bit unnatural, but it's easy and better when make mistake sort of "больш-Ава" or "втор-Ава (2th)"
By the way, "второго (second)" pronounce as "втАрОВА" and "большого" as "бАльшОВА"... It's hard to memorize. Be easy, speak "второго" "большого", you'll be understood

Re: How to pronounce -ого adjective ending
Ok thanks does that mean that actually if I always saying "ова" it will be ok, right? Or do you mean to say literally "ого" like "ogo" where "g" as in "big"?
Another thing I just observed and I am curious what is your opinion. Based on assumption I started to check adjectives having stress on the end that is all which end in -ой. What came out that all of those are pronounced with "ова" ending, while any other type of adjectives seems to have "ава". This pattern is also matching your example with второй. What do you think?

If i understood right
Not always - "двадцатОГО (сентября)" "двадцатЫЙ (век)" pronounced "двадцатОВА"
Re: How to pronounce -ого adjective ending
Yes you understood right. In this case does it sound very alien if I say "двадцатAВА"? On forvo the second recording sounds something like that: https://forvo.com/word/двадцатого/#ru
Because if it is not so big problem I could use the following scheme:
1. For ending "-ой" always pronounce "ова"
2. For any other always use "ава"
With this I would sound better compared to put everywhere only "ова" (until I learn all the endings by heart ). How do you see would it be an improvement and right to use 1. and 2. instead of "ова" everywhere or it is better to stay with "ова" everywhere?
Thank you

Re: How to pronounce -ого adjective ending
I think in lot of case this rule can be applying
Ofcourse, probable mistake, for example
"четвертый(4th)" "четвертОва" - correct
but difference in sounds between "четвертОва" and "четвертAва" not too big, both sounds acceptable
if it's not secret what country you're from?
