what case with the preposition "под"

Why do we use this case here? And this verb? What rule should I use here?

what case with the preposition "под"

Postby Canary » Mar 30th, 15, 20:57

Добрый день! Could you help me with the following doubt: I always thought that the preposition "под" needs instrumental (кошка под столом). But the other day I saw "я уже воевал, когда ты пешком под стол ходил". I understand the meaning of the phrase, but shouldn't it be "под столом"? Or is it just a set phrase?

here "под стол" is a direction. it is like:

плавать под водой -- нырять под воду
жить под крышей -- зайти под крышу
прятать под одеялом -- спрятаться под одеяло

под чем? -- подо что?
