Accusative case

привет, I don't understand the following in Lesson 3 of Cases:
Они читали книги.
Они знают актрис.
These are both plural feminine nouns, right. Why isn't the first one книг?

OK I just got it. Animate vs inanimate. How in the world will I remember all this??

In your lesson 1 you've explained the accusative case for inanimate subjects. Should be the same as the nominative.
However, in Dialog 3 you said; Это очень красивое пальто. Я куплю его.
But его is genitive and the coat пальто is not living, yet the accusative of non-living things
is supposed to be the same as the nominative (in this case of a neutral noun).
So why was the genitive used for the accusative to express that the person wants to buy "it" (the object)?
