Hello everyone, let's see who can help me with this one.

I'm having a look at verbs of movement and I don't understand a thing.

Is there any different at all between these two phrases.
Я шёл в кино.
Я ходил в кино.

At first I thought that maybe one very was perfective and the other one imperfective. But now I see that both are imperfective. So, do both mean "I was going to the cinema" or what do they mean? And, there's any difference?

Спасибо!

Hello, Technolok.

In the 1st phrase there is an accent on the action. The process is important

"I was going to the cinema and reading a book. Birds were singing and the sun was shining. It was a wonderful day!" -
Я шёл в кино и читал книгу. Птицы пели и солнце сияло. Это был чудесный день!

In the 2nd phrase the fact is important.
"I went to the cinema" | "I have been to the cinema" - Я ходил в кино.
"Last week I went to the cinema two times" - На прошлой неделе я ходил в кино два раза.

Alright I think I got it. Verbs or motion are tough indeed. Спасибо!

Hello,

Я шел - I was in the process to go to the cinema, only one time

Я ходил - like I use to go to the cinema, or I went to the cinema various times

Шёл is imperfective and relates to an action that happened once, or, if the action was repeated regularly, the emphasis is on a particular occurrence:
Я вчера шёл в магазин и по пути увидел моего друга. (Yesterday, while going to the store, I saw my friend.)
Maybe you go to the store every day, but this sentence emphasizes a particular event that happened yesterday. Шёл is sometimes called a "unidirectional" verb, as it cannot be ascertained from the context whether you returned from going to the store. That doesn't matter, because the point of the sentence is not that you returned, or that you go to the store regularly. The sentence is about a particular thing (one-time event) that happened yesterday.

Note the difference between шёл and пошёл:
Я вчера пошёл в магазин и по пути увидел моего друга. "Yesterday, I went to the store and on the way I saw my friend." Since the perfective form "пошёл" is used, we know that you reached your destination, i.e., the store. In other words, the action was completed.

Я вчера шёл в магазин и по пути увидел моего друга. "Yesterday, while going to the store, I saw my friend." Since the imperfective form "шёл" is used, we don't know if you reached your destination. Maybe you did; it's just not important because it's not the point of the sentence.

Ходил relates to an action that happened regularly or repeatedly in the past:
Когда я был подростком, я ходил в церковь каждое воскресенье. (When I was a teenager, I used to go to church every Sunday. Or, "по воскресеньям" "on Sundays.") Ходил is sometimes called a "multidirectional" verb, which implies going and returning regularly. That is, in fact, the point of the sentence.
