Hi ReneR,
the signature is as follows:
№266 Бэла. соч. М.Ю. Лермонтова. С. Палех. А.С. Баранов. 1938.
"Бэла" is a short novel by the famous Russian writer Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov (Михаил Юрьевич Лермонтов). The contraction "соч." possibly means "сочинение" (essay), which indicates that the author of "Bela" is Lermontov. "С. Палех" seems to mean "село Палех" (village of Palekh). According to Wikipedia, in 1947 Palekh acquired the status "urban-type settlement", and that is why before 1947 perhaps it had been called village. Due to the fact that you collect Russian lacquer boxes, you probably know that people who lived in Palekh made a lot of nice things with lacquer. Then the signature states the name "А.С. Баранов", which must be the name of the author of this box. 1938 is the year when the box was made.

So, the overall meaning of this signature seems to be that in 1938 in the village of Palekh A.S. Baranov made this box and drew a picture on it. This picture shows a situation from the novelette "Bela" by M.Yu. Lermontov.

That's a very deep and interesting topic! I remember writing essay on Lermontov and his legacy, got some valuable essay help back then. Recommend to check it out too if you want to come up with some quality material.
