the cases of в прошлом году

Why do we use this case here? And this verb? What rule should I use here?

the cases of в прошлом году

Postby smart888 » Aug 27th, 15, 16:44

Привет!

I'm confused by the phase "в прошлом году". "Году" looks like dative (the ending "у" of masculine nouns) but в прошлом seems to be prepositional, is it possible for an adjective and a noun go together and have different cases?

Спасибо и пока пока!

Hello.

That's right, году is dative, в прошлом is prepositional.
The ending "у" is a special case here, something like an exception (one of thousands in Russian language). Sometimes you just need to remember the exact case and stop searching for the reason why! Good luck.

P.S. And NO, it's never possible for an adjective and a noun to go together and have different cases.

Спасибо большое за ответ. Нам в прошлом году повезло в КОПАОНИКЕ перед приездом нападало, а в колашине к вечеру образовывались проплешины. Интересно гондолу из Пале до Яхорины построили?

Hello!
In Russian language some nouns ending in a consonant or -ь may have two forms of the Prepositional case: the first one ends in , the second one ends in a stressed -у́ or -ю́. As a rule, the second form is used for indicating a place. Compare, for example:
лес – forest
о ле́сеabout the forest
в лесу́in the forest

пол – floor
о по́леabout the floor
на полу́on the floor

бе́рег – shore
о бе́регеabout the shore
на берегу́on the shore

край – edge
о кра́еabout the edge
на краю́on the edge

The majority of these words are monosyllabic. Dictionaries usually inform foreigners about this second form of the Prepositional case.

The noun “год” (year) follows the same rule and ends in -у́, when used with the preposition “в”:
в э́том году́this year
в про́шлом году́last year
в сле́дующем году́next year
в две ты́сячи семна́дцатом году́in the year 2017
