меч = spring (of water) ?

Postby giomach » Jul 27th, 16, 17:29

Hi.

There is a story by Turgenev called "Касьян с Красивой Мечи", Kassyan of Fair Springs. I can't find this word меч or мечи in any dictionary, in book form or on-line. They all say меч means a sword. Can anyone explain?

Thank you.

To try and answer my own question :-)

It seems that Красивая Меча is the name of a river ( https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9A%D1 ... 1%87%D0%B0 )

So perhaps it is best to regard Меча as a proper name, of unknown meaning as many names are, though there are unconvincing stories connecting it with a legendary sword.

Other better informed contributions are still welcome!
