Why do we use this case here? And this verb? What rule should I use here?

Pronunciation of это and эта

Postby Technolok » Dec 23rd, 13, 12:59

Hello all Russian lovers :D

Are это and эта pronounced differently or do they sound exactly the same? To my ears there's no difference at all, but maybe native speakers notice a difference. Can anyone help me?

Is there any region in Russia where they actually pronounce "e-to" instead of "e-ta" when saying это?

Спасибо!

Hi again)
I'm russian and I can assure you that there is no differences in pronunciation. As long as I live, I haven't met anyone, who would say "eto" instead of "eta". Besides foreigners, of course)

Hello, this "problem" is easy to understand for foreigners (like me and you). The russian language has no grammar rules for this case. a simple response is:

o (in this case sound like a)

ó (in this case the sound is o)

Russian has no rules for accents.

a simple example from English to Spanish:

"The" is "El" in spanish:

The boy = El chico

The sound is very different for Spanish people

The boy = De boy.

¿what is the reason? only learn "The" is "El" and pronunced "De".

Sorry for my english.

Generally, there is no a big difference between these words, when you pronounsing them. Both sound like "эта". Maybe sometimes the letter "о" in the word "это" sounds close to the English sound "e" in words with "-er" ending.

Yes, in some regions of Russia it is a local standard of pronunciation, when the letter "о" always sounds like "о" and never like "а". They may be regions that close to Ukraine, or some little towns, villages, mainly in the Volga Region (Поволжье).

The main rule is to pronounce the letter "о" like "о", when it is under a stress only, and like "а" - without stress.

это - [эта] - this (neuter), it
эта - [эта] - this (feminine)

молоко - [малако] - a milk
хорошо - [харашо] - good, that's good
хороший - [харошый] - a good one (masculine)

копыто [капыта] - a hoof (single, neuter)
копыта [капыта] - hooves (plural, neuter)
As you can see, the last two words sound the same.

Pronunciation of это and эта

Postby KaminDox » Oct 16th, 16, 13:57

One of my co-workers teaches his students the pronunciation of dr as a jr sound, so drive is pronounced as jrive. He does the same with tr pronouncing it as chr, so train is pronounced chrain. I personally disagree and think of it as a lazy way to get students to say them. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Dont mean to hi-jack your thread but, is the T33s the same as the Russian 1895 Nagant, .32 caliber instead of .30 as marked?
