For a Russian person the Red Square is "red" or "beautiful"?

Postby Technolok » Apr 28th, 14, 22:30

Привет всем!

I've read that the word "красная" from "Red Square" (Красная площадь) means both "red" and "beautiful".

So for a Russian person, which one is the meaning they think of when the read Красная площадь? Do they think of "Red Square", or is it "Beautiful Square"? Or is it both?

Maybe there's some Russian out there with the answer
Learning Russian is difficult, but not impossible!

Hi! Nowadays when we use the word красный we always mean red. So красная площадь means only red square for us, even if initially the meaning was beautiful square.

Note: Kremlin at the Red square initially was white. It was painted red only in 192х by communists.
