The prepositional case of сад is саду or саде?

Why do we use this case here? And this verb? What rule should I use here?

The prepositional case of сад is саду or саде?

Postby Technolok » Jul 26th, 14, 16:14

Hello everyone!

I have learnt that the word "сад" has an irregular prepositional case, which is "саду", so we have to say:
- Я гуляю в саду

...but I have seen sentences like this one:
- Я думаю о саде

I understand that in both sentences сад is in the prepositional case, right? If so, then why the ending of the word сад is different? Is it because this word has two different prepositional cases? Is that possible?

Hi Technolok!

Some words in Russian have their locative form with ending "y". Locative form is the part of the Prepositional case and usually they have the same endings. But in this case (в саду - о саде) endings are different.
Maybe you'll find this discussion useful.

Good luck in studying Russian!

Thanks a lot for the explanation!

So "locative" is a Russian case? I think it was a case in Latin, but I didn't know anything about locative in Russian? So locative and prepositional are two cases which have the same endings except for those exceptions?

No, it's a part of prepositional case and concerns only limited list of words.
Actually before you asked I had never noticed that some words have different endings in prepositional :) We don't study locative when we learn russian grammar at school.
