difference between заходить / проходить

Why do we use this case here? And this verb? What rule should I use here?

difference between заходить / проходить

Postby machine_head » Apr 6th, 15, 12:21

Hi everyone!

I'm studying the verbs of motion and I can't understand the difference between заходить and проходить. Both are translated as "to pass by", correct? Also, in the imperative: заходите в комнату, проходите в комнату. Is there any difference?

Wish me luck with Russian verbs of motion, they are something :)

hi,

the verb заходить has nothing to do with pass by. It means to enter, to drop in. It's the verb проходить which means pass by. Yet, when you invite someone standing at your door, you say Проходите, пожалуйста! you can also say Заходи!

We use заходи! when inviting someone to our house, but this person is not at our door at the moment. For example, you're talking on the phone or in thr street with someone and tell him: Заходи ко мне сегодня вечерком, я испеку вкусный пирог! or Зайдешь ко мне сегодня? or Будешь в Москве, обязательно заходи в гости! Буду очень рад.

Good luck!
