Another dishes that I know is the Pryanik, (Pryanik comes from "priani" which means spice in Russian), predecessor of contemporary spice cake, this dish dates back to the 9th century. At the time, it was not made with spices, honey only, and was therefore known as "honey cake".

There's an old Russian drink called Medovukha (медовуха) which might be even older than kvass. It must be thousands of years old, as old as beer or even more.

Medovukha is a honey-based alcoholic drink, similar to the mead they drink in Lord of the Rings, but cheaper and easier to make. You only have to boil water, add honey, hops and yeast. You let the drink rest for one week and that's it, you have a nice beverage ready to drink ;)

The most stable stereotype about Russia is related to алкоголь (alcohol). Not a lot of people know that the culture of using алкоголь in Russia is very different from the Western one. Drinking vodka without закуска, that is, without a lot of food, is a sign of low social status and even alcoholism.

Do not do as some locals do: drinking водка (vodka) and even пиво (beer) in the streets and on public transport is prohibited by law. If a stranger asks you to выпить (drink alcohol), do not consider this to be Russian hospitality. It could be a criminal. The correct answer will be: Я не пью (I don't drink).
