пропасть: Is the first "п" in пропасть silent in the Russian pronunciation?

Why do we use this case here? And this verb? What rule should I use here?

пропасть -- verb (to lose) or noun (chasm) -- no matter, the first "п" (and the second) sounds by joining lips.
I wonder about basis for this query.

Growing up in a Russian speaking family, I always heard the 'п' sounded. It sounds like a 'p' in English.
